Central Cemetery Vienna

Musicians grave Vienna, Central Cemetery Vienna

Tombstone Ludwig van Beethoven

Musicians’ graves, art nouveau church, “beautiful funerals”

Over an area of 2.5 km2, some three million people are buried. The cemetery is a resting place for people of all denominations. Of particular interest are the numerous graves of honor, such as those of Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (even though he is not buried there). We pass the graves of other famous musicians and actors, high-ranking politicians and ordinary people. A particular architectural treasure is the art nouveau cemetery church dedicated to St Charles Borromeo. The exceptional grave of the Austrian musician Falco is yet another attraction. . On our way, we pass some group graves, the baby lot, the Forest Cemetery, a Muslim section and the Park for Peace and Power.
There are, of course, many stories to be told on this matter, as basically the Viennese are said to have a special relationship with death. Listen to what a “beautiful funeral” is and what the meaning of this is still today. As Georg Kreisler sang: “Der Tod, das muss ein Wiener sein [Death, that must be a Viennese]“.
